Foundation Day
Dear EBC family,
This is the big day, and I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about: The concrete slab for our Phase II addition was poured this morning! The pour has not been without some drama, as the pump truck had some problems, rain was threatening to fall, and the next available pour date was almost a month out. Now the pour is complete, but it has been raining off and on, forcing them to wait a bit to do the final finish work.
Today is also Election Day, of course, and there will certainly be some drama as the votes pour in. The results of our collective decisions today will either strengthen or weaken the foundation of our nation. Our founding fathers established a solid base for America almost 250 years ago, creating foundational principles that align closely with biblical values. But as Americans have increasingly ignored God in recent decades, our nation has been steadily dismantling much of the foundation and tossing the planks into the bonfire of rebellion. God-fearing people across the country cry out with David, “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)
Happily, the answer is that the righteous (those who love and submit to the God of righteousness) can do much.
- Preserve the Foundation. Although the foundation of our nation has indeed suffered much damage, much good remains. Christians should vote for candidates most likely to value and preserve our biblical foundation. Reject the suggestion that your vote doesn’t matter because of the statistics. God promises that no effort in Christ is wasted. (1 Cor. 15:58) We should also pray against those who have openly declared their intention to dismantle our foundation further. Prayer is most certainly an effort God promises to redeem.
- Trust the Founder. It quite possible that when the election winners are finally confirmed, many of the results will be discouraging from a biblical point of view. But God will remain God, and he calls his people not only to vote his values, but to live them out in the midst of a crooked and depraved generation. (Phil. 2:15) No election result can prevent you from living for Christ. Jesus promised to build his church and the not even the gates of hell can stand against it. (Mt 16:18) I will remain confident about the building of God’s kingdom, no matter how our country goes.
- Long for His City. Old Abraham faced many moments and seasons of deep discouragement and distress as he waited for God to fulfill his promises. How did he maintain his faith? “For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” (Heb 11.10) Abraham worked hard to live for God in the place God put him, but all the while he was looking ahead to his ultimate home with God. So vote, pray, and live for Christ with good hope in what God can do. But keep your heart aimed at God’s Celestial City, whose foundation will never fail.
