I Wish I Were Better At This

Dear EBC family,

Have you ever felt inadequate for the situation you were facing? Correction: When was the last time you wished you were better equipped to face a certain scenario? Consider these real life situations.

• Giving good advice? Your co-worker just confided in you that she found some deeply troubling items in her son’s room, and she wonders what she should do. What do you say?
• Parenting effectively? You just prayed with a heartbroken mom whose adult children who no longer identify as Christians. You wonder if you’re doing all you can to help your own kids hang on to their faith.
• Understanding your Bible? Bible reading is important, you know that. But you struggle to understand it, and often come away more frustrated than helped. If only you knew how to make sense of it!
• Enjoying our special members? Inwardly, you love seeing those with disabilities being such a special part of our church family. You’d like to encourage them, but are unsure what would be helpful.
• Protecting your kids? The increasing darkness of sexual immorality in our culture leaves you fearful for your kids. How can you help keep them safe and healthy as they age in the midst of so much darkness?
• Scrolling too much? You just overheard your grade school daughter telling your neighbor you don’t have time play with her because you’re always on your phone. You are mortified and wonder if that is actually true.
• Are they getting it? You’ve been teaching your group for many years. But sometimes you wonder how much of a difference it is making.
• Supporting the neurodiverse? There are now a number of people in your life with autism, ADHD, or other neuro conditions, and you wish you knew how to interact with them more helpfully and confidently.
• Helping your homeless friend? You see him often enough you now know his name and are getting acquainted. But you wonder how you can help him, or how you shouldn’t.
• Finding your passion? Your years as a Christian are now measured in decades, and you love your Savior. But you wonder how you can help others find the same joy you have.

Your daily life almost certainly includes one or more of these kinds of situations, and we muddle through as best we can, wishing in the moment we were better at it. Well, now is our chance!
