At youth group this week we played a game with some silly questions to help students get to know one another, and we cooled off in the heat with some water balloons while playing capture the flag!

Our lesson was a bit more interactive with the goal that our students will be able to practice how to study the Bible well. We looked at book 3 in the Psalms and spent some time studying Psalm 79. In this Psalm the author is crying out to the Lord because of the destruction that had fallen on God’s people likely around the time of the Babylonian Exile. We studied some of the background of the psalm and how the psalmist responded to the Lord in a place of pain and suffering. We used this prayer as a model for how we can come to the Lord in prayer during hard times. We had two main takeaways:

  1. God wants us to be honest and real with Him and others in our life when we are experiencing pain.
  2. In hard times, we can cling to God knowing that He will follow through on His promises.
