Lawn Chair Sunday
Dear EBC family,
I am freshly returned from enjoying the beauty and community that always characterizes EBC Family Camp. I would normally use this space to share some of the highlights, like exploring God’s amazing trees in the Bible (while sitting under trees!), or celebrating the ten who were baptized Sunday morning. But stories will have to wait because an urgent task needs attention. Here’s the backstory.
Many years ago, the sanctuary in Evergreen’s previous building was filled with wooden pews upholstered with burnt orange fabric. They were actually quite nice, both to look at and to sit in, but they weren’t very versatile. In the year 2000, the decision was made to replace the pews with chairs. We put the pews on Ebay and sold them for a dollar each with the stipulation the buyer come and get them. A church in Canada came and loaded them into a Ryder truck that turned out to be too short. Nevertheless, they loaded them up and drove away with four feet sticking out the back. The new chairs had not yet arrived, so the following Sunday everyone brought their own. We dubbed it ‘Lawn Chair Sunday’ and it is one of my favorite memories.
The trusty green sanctuary chairs are now 25 years old and are being replaced as part of the broader construction project. The new ones arrive this Friday! In light of this imminent delivery, I invite your help and prayers on two specific needs.
- Ten Strong People to Unload New Chairs on Friday, 8-9am
The new chairs come in stacks of 12 weighing 240 pounds each. We have a plan for how to do it, but it will not work without strong workers. Please pray we can gather this team. If you can help, please reply to this message.
- Find a New Home for the Green Chairs (asap)
We have been putting the word out to various churches about the availability of 250 free chairs. I believe there must be a church or ministry for whom these chairs would be a huge blessing. They are well used, but still have a lot of good use left in them. The trick is finding the church that needs them. Please pray that we will find a great home for the chairs, and that we find it soon!
