Good afternoon, friends! Last night at youth group we spent the evening finishing up the 1st chapter of Jonah. We compared and contrasted the life of Jonah with the life of Jesus.

The contrasting event that was discovered consisted of Jonah having an “Eeyore” response to the sailors when asked who he was, whereas Jesus was determined and willing to be sacrificed for His people. It was significant to notice that the sailors said they did not want Jonah’s blood on their hands, and Jonah still put their lives in jeopardy. Considering those that were condemning Christ said they wanted his blood on their hands and on the hands of their children, Jesus was still willing to die for them.

There were two major events that we read where a comparison could be made. The first one was how the sailors were caught in a storm and God calmed it. That was compared to the disciples in the middle of the storm and looking to Jesus to calm it. The other comparison wrapped up the teaching in Jonah 1:17 where we see Jonah in the belly of the fish for 3 days and nights, which shows perfectly how Jesus was in the belly of the earth for 3 days and nights.

We see the contrasting event as our application in this story. It makes us think about the type of person Jesus was to willingly sacrifice himself despite being beaten and mocked. We truly serve the most incredible and selfless God. Praise His name!

Be Blessed,
Matt Arnett
