The Big Bang
I was talking to a friend last week and he posed a great question he heard from an apologist. Why do we believe in Christianity?
Because it is true! The Bible is true. Each week we are going to do a brief spotlight that gives evidence for why the Bible is true.
Now, what is apologetics? It comes from the Greek word Apologia which means “defense.” What scripture backs up that we should defend our faith? The main scripture that I look to is 1 Peter 3:15 which says, “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect….”
Apologetics is not to gain knowledge about the Bible and the evidence God has given us to abuse and debate. It is used to help others see that the Bible can be trusted and an opportunity for us to present these facts with love and respect.
The topic I want to touch on today is the Big Bang. I am sure this topic will be discussed further as it has many talking points. I have heard a few students talk about this theory and I want to show how our universe points to God.
I have created an outline that shows how the Big Bang and Evolution do not fit in the Biblical account of creation. If you would like a copy, please let me know! (marnett@evergreenbible.com).
So why can they not go hand-in-hand? I want to hone in on one specific thing – the beginning.
The Big Bang states that every single thing in existence today has come from absolutely nothing. Secular scientists will tell you that the Big Bang occurred when all matter and energy were at one dense point, which caused a massive explosion. The issue with that though, is where did that matter and energy come from? They had to have come from something!
Scientists will often state that they come from a few different things. One is either another universe or a black hole. The most illogical claim is they came from absolutely nothing. However, we know that everything that BEGINS to exist in our universe has a creator. Absolutely everything. So matter and energy also had to have a creator. There had to be something before the energy and matter. When it comes to the black hole, another universe, a slew of universes, all of these ALSO have a beginning and have to have a creator.
The beginning of time had to have a creator that is timeless, spaceless, immaterial, and very intelligent. The creator must be beginning-less. The best explanation for a creator that is outside of time, space, and is immaterial, is God. Our God is eternal, and never had a beginning because He is outside of time. HE created time! He is the reason for all matter and energy. We did not come from nothing, we came from something and that something is a God who deeply loves you!
Think about this – if you are walking down a beach and you see a watch, you would not think to yourself, “Oh, that watch just appeared out of nowhere.” You would know that the watch came from something/someone. You would know that the watch has a very intelligent designer. Think of the watch as our universe. It is riddled with intricate parts that are quite complex. This complex item had to have a creator who thought through how to design each and every piece that works. That watch had a designer.
Our designer is God!
