The Importance of Increasing Our Bible Study Efforts
Psalm 119:14-16 says: “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”
In studying the Bible, we will find that experience in spiritual things makes the Book plain to us. A little ten-year-old boy, who had been much afflicted, prayed to the Lord and found help. Sometime later, while alone reading his Bible, he found this text: “This poor man cried and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:6). It so fitted his experience that his heart was made glad, and he pointed it out to his mom, and had her mark it.
We ought to read a portion of the Bible carefully, prayerfully and lovingly each day of our lives. Just as a fire needs fresh fuel, and the body needs new supplies of food daily, so the soul that would be strong and holy needs something fresh from the Bible every day!
Here you have five benefits of increasing our Bible study efforts:
1. It is through the Word of God that we grow up in faith.
“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” (Rom. 10:17).
2. The Bible corrects us when we are going astray.
“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.” (Philippians 2:14-15).
3. God’s Word gives us great and loving thoughts of our Heavenly Father, and makes our hearts tender toward Him.
“When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight,
for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty.” (Jeremiah 15:16).
4. The Scriptures help us to mature in our spirit, and to be able to serve Jesus and others.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
5. This is the only Book that will help us to hold out faithful to the end and not make shipwreck of faith.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8).
These are just a few ideas about how beneficial the Bible is to us. Let me invite you to use your time well by setting aside some room for your devotions, do not miss church during the weekends, look for other weekly Bible study activities, like joining one of our Life Groups, coming to one of our specific Bible studies here at church or whenever you hear there’s a Bible-learning opportunity coming up.
In only two more weeks, our Spanish ministries will be offering a conference and workshops on spiritual reproduction, Bible discipleship and Christian ministry led by Dave Johnson, Paul and Jean Goodner, Action International Ministries missionaries who have dedicated their lives to training church leaders and volunteers for the work of the ministry. Friday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 6 at 9:00 a.m. at the Commons. This will be developed in English and Spanish so, please, feel welcome to join us if you can make time for this fun bilingual event! There will be a sign-up form soon on the Spanish page of our website for RSVP.
Also, starting as of Wednesday, January 14 of 2026 I will be leading a bilingual Bible study here at church, every Wednesday from 5-6pm at the adult room on the second floor. This will fulfill two desired purposes: to increase our Bible study efforts and, why not? To learn some English and Spanish from each other!
