Who Are You?

In 1978, The Who wrote a song that asked a big question: Who Are You? Now, I don’t think the ultimate aim of The Who was for their listeners to ask significant, self-reflective questions. I think they were more interested in questioning authority. But alas, the question is still a good one: Who Are You?

For Leanne’s birthday, I got her/our family a doggie DNA test for our 4-month-old pup Murdock. When we got him, we met his parents, and it was our understanding that he was a mutt. Part Akita, part German Shepherd, and part… some other things. Well, we just got the DNA test back, and we now know a bit more about Murdock. He is 24% Akita and 34% German Shepherd. But in a total surprise, he is also 36% Great Pyrenees. And then he rounds out with a 3% touch of Chow Chow and 1% smidgen of Maremma Sheepdog.

I’ve never done a human ancestry test for myself, but I’m sure it would be interesting to learn more about my own ancestral roots. But even if I took that test, it wouldn’t tell me the most important things about me. Personality tests can be really helpful for understanding ourselves, as well, and recently I took a test and read a book called The Four Tendencies, and that learning has really been eye-opening. But again, even as I understand myself and why I do the things I do, that still doesn’t tell me the MOST important things about myself.

Of course, the source that gives us the most important information about ourselves is the Bible. If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, in that moment of faith many things changed altogether. Here are just a handful of the things that are absolutely true of you, because you are in Christ.

• You are accepted. Just as you are, in your current state, you are fully accepted into the very family of the King of the Universe.
• You are fully loved. There will never be a day when you are more or less loved by God. His love for you is full, and there is nothing you can do to cause that love to increase, nor is there anything you can do to diminish His love for you.
• You are entirely forgiven. There isn’t more work to do to earn the full forgiveness you have already received.
• You have a Heavenly future. You already have a place that is being perfectly prepared for you by Jesus. Your eternal future is secure.
• You have a wonderful purpose. You are an ambassador for the King of King, representing Him to a watching world. You always carry with you the message of reconciliation, that God, through Christ, is reconciling the world to Himself.

And there is so much more, too! But even if we could just grab hold today of those five truths and live in light of those truths, it would radically transform our day! And perhaps it might just have a transformative effect on others, too! So, dear Christians, remember who you are!
